Villages and Castles

The area of Riccione has much culture and is the protagonist of the loves and battles of the MontefeltroMontefeltro and Malatesta families.

The hinterland is also full of history and is definitely worth visiting.

Entroterra

Don’t miss:

  • Gradara. Renowned for its castle (the backdrop to the tragic love between famous lovers Paolo and Francesca in Dante Alighieri’s Divina Commedia), the surrounding area is a characteristic medieval village.
  • Montegridolfo.It is considered one of the Borghi più belli d’Italia (most beautiful villages in Italy) thanks to involvement by haute couture designer Alberta Ferretti, so much so that Jean Paul Gaultier stays here when in the area on business.
  • Mondaino. It was the protagonist of fierce battles between the Malatesta and the Montefeltro families, and today is known for its typical Formaggio delle Fosse, sheep’s milk cheese, and its characteristic Palio dello Daino, an horse race held in August.
  • Montefiore Conca. Another village among the most beautiful villages in Italy is this medieval fortress with roads and houses that have remained uncontaminated. Further more it offers a beautiful panorama.
  • San Giovanni in Marignano. This village at the gates to Cattolica was considered the granary of the Malatesta family and was along Garibaldi’s route in 1859. Today it is significant due to the important international companies it has become home to. The Night of the Witches is also celebrated here - a celebration of mysteries and fascination on the summer solstice day.
  • Montebello. This village was under the dominion of the Malatesta and the Montefeltro families and is famous for its castle. It is said that this castle is haunted by the spirit of Azzurrina (Guendalina Malatesta), an albino girl who disappeared among the castle’s walls on June 21, 1375 and who is said to be heard every half-decade precisely on the day of the summer solstice.
